Base ERP selection on operating requirements
Compare SAP Business One, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Cloud ERP Private using process complexity, standardisation, group architecture, migration requirements and organisational readiness—including when the current system should be retained for now.
Criteria that distinguish the ERP paths
Assess operating complexity, countries, standardisation, integration, headquarters architecture and management requirements before comparing product functions.
- Operating scale and complexity: a single growing business or a multi-entity group.
- Country footprint and consolidation: a single-country operation or cross-border reporting and consolidation.
- Process standardisation: adoption of SAP standard processes or documented requirements that must be retained.
- Integration depth: the number, criticality and ownership of systems connected to ERP.
- Head-office architecture: local independence or alignment with an overseas group SAP system.
- Governance: the required level of auditability, control, group reporting and consolidation.
Match the operating profile to an ERP path
These profiles provide an initial product view. Where the signals point in different directions, MTC reviews the operating model, architecture and migration requirements in more detail.
Conditions for assessing SAP Business One
- A growing business or relatively self-contained subsidiary with manageable entity, process and integration complexity.
- A core requirement to unify finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, production or service records.
- Xero, MYOB, spreadsheets or disconnected systems no longer provide the required control, traceability and management reporting.
Conditions for assessing SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
- A new implementation will use standard cloud processes and a reusable template across Singapore or multiple entities.
- Business owners support fit-to-standard, with required differences managed through configuration, integration and clean-core extensions.
- The target countries, industries and processes fit the current Public Edition delivery model.
Conditions for assessing SAP Cloud ERP Private
- An existing ECC, S/4HANA or complex non-SAP landscape requires system conversion, selective data transition or a planned new implementation.
- The group core, industry depth, retained history or critical integrations require broader configuration and transition options.
- The Singapore entity will join the group core template or act as a regional layer for multi-country processes, data responsibilities and reporting.
Conditions for retaining the current system
Continue with the current landscape while the following readiness gaps are resolved:
- Operations remain simple and stable, and the current finance and operating systems still meet management requirements.
- Master data, transaction rules and operating ownership are not yet defined; complete the readiness work first.
- Management has not yet assigned business owners, decision responsibilities or a project budget.
Define the Singapore entity’s role in the group ERP landscape
The design depends on how much process and data control remains with headquarters. Common options include:
- Local autonomy: the Singapore entity selects an ERP for local operations and supplies the required data to the group.
- Group template: the Singapore entity adopts the headquarters process, master-data, system and reporting standards.
- Two-tier ERP: Singapore uses SAP Business One or SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and exchanges approved data and transactions with headquarters S/4HANA.
ERP and operations upgrade for Singapore businesses covers local finance and operating requirements. Group Management and Globalisation & Localisation cover group architecture and rollout requirements.
ERP Selection FAQ
Which SAP ERP product should the organisation evaluate?
Assess the target operating model, process depth, standardisation, group architecture, migration and integration requirements. Business One fits a growing business or subsidiary with manageable complexity; Public Edition fits a new implementation adopting standard cloud processes; Private Edition fits a complex group core, an existing SAP transition or a deeply integrated landscape.
When should we reassess Business One against S/4HANA?
Reassess when group complexity, process depth, integration requirements or the target operating model no longer fit Business One. Business One and S/4HANA are separate product paths: a future move is planned as a migration or new implementation after a fresh fit assessment, not as an in-place upgrade.
How do SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Cloud ERP Private differ?
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition primarily serves new implementations that adopt fit-to-standard and standard cloud processes. SAP Cloud ERP Private provides broader transition and configuration options for existing ECC or S/4HANA landscapes, complex industry processes, retained history, deep integrations and group-core architectures.
When should the organisation retain its current system?
If operations remain simple, data is not ready or no project owner has been assigned, retaining the current system and completing readiness work is usually the better decision.
Request an ERP fit review
Submit the operating model, markets, current systems and head-office architecture. MTC will identify the product path that warrants detailed assessment and any readiness work needed first.
